This test is very cool and I think that a lot of people should take this short test to see what their global footprint is and how they could improve on how they live. I myself should improve on how I live because if everyone in the world lived like me it would take 3.7 planet Earth's to provide enough resources.
The calculation takes into account the entire earth. You are right. The reason we all fit is because people in developing countries have a much smaller carbon footprint. In fact, if you take the test again and choose a different country, you will get a much smaller result even if you keep your lifestyle the same. This is because the this footprint calculator takes into account not only your individual footprint but also your societal footprint. Just by living in a developed country like the US, that has paved roads, hospitals, infrastructure etc... our footprint is automatically higher. If you mess with the options on the website, the lowest possible footprint for someone who lives in America is about 3.4 Earths. You can read more about how this is calculated on the website.
